More about me:
My approach to art and spiritual practice could be described as “Sacred and Silly” – a playful yet reverent attitude towards the awe-inspiring.
As Dr. Seuss once said, “I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, it’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, and that enables you to laugh at life’s realities.” I embrace this whimsical perspective, blending the sacred and the silly in my art-making, facilitation, and teaching.
I have long been drawn to crafts and community, seeking to make meaning through materials. Through many summers spent at The Grunewald Guild, an artist retreat center in the Cascade Mountains of WA, I discovered the magic of art-making with intentional community gathered around. Deep in the visceral array of art supplies, conversations can spark insight and transformation, exploring life’s big questions through the senses and tactile mediums.
My search for transcendent meaning includes a fascination with religious art, architecture and material piety. (“Material piety” includes beloved tchotchkes– knickknacks, small bric-à-brac, trinkets–that we carry to remind us of essential truths, memories or hopes).
My journey is rooted in Christianity, guided by the liberation theological traditions of the Jesuits. My heart and art are open to the wisdom and beauty of other spiritual, philosophical and poetic traditions. At our core, we humans are spiritual beings. Spirituality can be viewed in a variety of ways… a traditional understanding as an expression of religiosity, in search of the sacred…or a humanistic approach striving for inspiration, reverence, awe, meaning and purpose.
With over 20 years of experience in ministry, creativity, and spirituality, I have specialized in the spiritual development of children and teens. I was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, moving West from there: undergraduate with the Jesuits at Saint Louis University, Americorps on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, a Master’s in Divinity from the Santa Clara School of Theology in Berkeley, CA, and 10 years of ordained ministry in the United Church of Christ in Washington State. For now, my focus in on making art and being a mom.
I currently reside in the Seattle area with my family, a chatty cat, a well-stocked craft supply closet, and a variety of snacks.
My screen prints are the perfect size for mailing or gifting– brighten someone’s day and strengthen human connection.
